Being a chemical analogue of the phenethylamine, amphetamine and cathinone class, this synthetic compound shares very close chemical similarity with 4-MMC or Mephedrone, which is well known to cause sympathomimetic effects closely related to other stimulant like chemicals. Officially described in the literature as 4-methylmethcathinone or 3-methylephedrone and later being abbreviated as 3-MMC, this research chemical has clearly been resurrected for laboratory studies due to its fascinating chemical core and clear hypothesized affinity for the closely studied monoamine transporters; Dopamine (DAT), Seretonin (SERT) and Noradrenaline (NET).
Although 3-MMC is hypothesized to activate various receptor pathways commonly associated with other cathinone like compounds, no official in vivo studies have been conducted on humans. It has therefore been confined to in vitro affinity testing in secure laboratory conditions. Much of the information regarding 3-MMC is taken from the previous research conducted on its chemical cousin 4-MMC and to a lesser extent 2-FMA.
Based on this previous information and some basic pharmacodynamics knowledge, it would be fair to assume that 3-MMC (like 4-MMC) is able to act as a releasing agent for dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline. However, due to the time frame between its characterization and global availability it would be wrong to make such assumptions without rigorous testing in controlled conditions.

3-Methylmethcathinone (also known as 3-MMC or metaphedrone)
is a novel stimulant-entactogen substance of the cathinone class that produces a mixture of classical stimulant and entactogenic effects when administered. It is a member of a group known as the substituted cathinones, all of which are derivatives of cathinone, the principal active component in the khat plant (Cathulla edullis) of eastern Africa.
As with many of its research chemical cathinone predecessors, 3MMC is known to come in the form of either a white powder or crystallized shards which users can ingest to produce a powerful, fast-acting but short-lived euphoric stimulant-entactogen effects, particularly when they are insufflated, vaporized or injected.
It has gained notoriety for its associated tendency to induce compulsive redosing and addictive behaviors in a seemingly significant percentage of its users as well the ability to readily induce paranoid, anxiety, various delusional states and stimulant psychosis when taken too frequently, in excessive amounts, or over extended periods of time.
Very little data exists about the pharmacological properties, metabolism, and toxicity of 3-MMC, and it has little history of human usage. 3-MMC first became available on the online research chemical market, shortly after the banning of mephedrone. It is a prominent example of a contemporary designer drug specifically chosen to mimic and/or replace the functional and structural features of its recently-controlled predecessors.
3-MMC, or 3-Methylmethcathinone, is a molecule of the substituted cathinone class. Cathinones are a sub-category of amphetamines, sharing share the core amphetamine structure of a phenyl ring bound to an amino (NH2) group through an ethyl chain and an additional methyl substitution at Rα.
3-MMC and other cathinones are differentiated by their ketone substitution on the beta carbon of the amphetamine skeleton, meaning they are β-keto-amphetamines. 3-MMC has two methyl substitutions on its cathinone skeleton, one at R3 of the phenyl ring, and a second at the nitrogen group RN.
3-MMC is analogous to mephedrone; it is identical in structure except for the placement of the methyl group at R3 instead of R4.
Pharmacology – 3MMC
Due to the lack of research regarding the substance, all discussion regarding the pharmacology of it is purely speculation based upon its structure and subjective effect similarities to other stimulants such as mephedrone, amphetamine and 2-FMA. 3-MMC most likely acts as both a dopamine and norepinephrine releasing agent. This means it may effectively boost the levels of the norepinephrine and dopamine neurotransmitters in the brain by binding to and partially blocking the transporter proteins that normally remove those monoamines from the synaptic cleft. This allows dopamine and norepinephrine to accumulate within the brain, resulting in stimulating and euphoric effects.
In most countries worldwide, this “research chemical” was banned concurrently with 4-MMC (mephedrone) because it is a structural isomer.
Compared to other new psychoactive substances, 3-MMC has quite a few animal studies, so it is much more sophisticated than other designer drugs, though it only appeared on the RC market in that decade.
Nevertheless, one can not deduce the organism of an animal from humans, which is why, despite the experiments, no reliable information can be given on the mechanism of action.
Since the prohibition of 3-MMC there are very strong quality fluctuations, according to many user reports, the effect of either very positive and pleasant, or negative and barely noticeable, with constant dose and person.
As with mephedrone, the so-called “Pre-Ban” 3-MMC is much better than the currently available one.
On the one hand, these significant differences in quality may be due to the purity of the material and, on the other hand, to the fact that there is an inactive 3-MMC isomer that can be formed in the synthesis.

Euphoric – The euphoria triggered by 3-MMC is described by the vast majority of consumers as significantly lower than that triggered by mephedrone. That’s why 4-MMC is also the much more popular substance.
Nevertheless, compared to other mephedrone alternatives (such as 3-MEC, 4-MEC, 3-CMC, Mexedron & co.), 3-MMC is still quite strongly euphoric.
Empathogen – Empathy towards other people can be increased but is less pronounced than with MDMA, Methylon & co.
The effect of 3-MMC is cathinone-typical, i. stimulating, euphoric and generally intoxicating.
The addictive potential is quite high, much higher than in MDMA, Methylon & co., As repeated replenishment still produces an effect, which, however, is accompanied by strong side effects over time.
For people who have never used a common cathinone, the effect can be compared with that of cocaine, or perhaps somewhere between MDMA and amphetamine, but there are clear differences in the effects.
The aphrodisiac component is very much in the foreground, that is, the sex drive is sometimes increased enormously (but it can lead to erectile dysfunction in men, especially in higher doses).
The effect is very different when comparing 3-MMC orally with 3-MMC nasal.
Orally, the effect is significantly more subtle and according to some user reports MDMA-like, nasal there is a “flash” and the effect is significantly harder and more violent
Compared with 4-MMC (mephedrone), the effect of 3-methylmethcathinone is milder / “weaker” and less euphoric.
Consumer forms / application routes
Common is the oral and nasal consumption of 3-MMC.
When used orally, the effect is a little less intense and lasts much longer.
In case of nasal consumption, it sets in faster and lasts shorter, which leads to significantly more craving (ie greed for the substance / Nachlegedrang).
In addition, the nasal mucous membranes are severely damaged by the substance, it can lead to nosebleeds, etc. If the 3-MMC is obtained in crystalline form, it should be comminuted as well as possible because coarse crystals cause fine cuts.
Intravenous, inhalative, rectal and sublingual consumption is also possible, but very little is known about these forms of consumption.

development of tolerance
The development of tolerance occurs at 3-MMC as with other similar cathinones, each intake increases the tolerance and regular / too frequent use can cause a tolerance to sometimes very long.

3MMC – 3-methylmethcathinone pharmacology
Since there are no studies on the mechanism of action of this substance in humans, the data on the pharmacology of 3-MMC based on speculation.
Presumably, like mephedrone, it acts mainly as dopamine and norepinephrine.
It is also likely that there is a serotonergic effect, possibly acting as a serotonin 3-MMC, reuptake inhibitor or both.
3-MMC HCl is not well soluble in ethanol (~ 5mg / ml), DMSO (~ 2.5mg / ml) and dimethylformamide (DMF) (~ 1mg / ml).
It is also water-soluble, but the exact solubility is unknown.
Mixed consumption and dangerous combinations
Mixed consumption od 3-MMC is basically a drastic increase in risk.
Every single combination has to be informed in advance and experience reports must be searched for as there can always be dangerous interactions.
– Other stimulants: The mixed use of different stimulants is potentially very dangerous as the blood pressure and heart rate are greatly increased and side effects such as dehydration are also increased.
– In a scientific study it was found that the mephedrone related to this substance in the mixed use with methamphetamine, amphetamine and MDMA in rats had a strongly increased Nerotoxizität result, the same could also apply to this cathinone!

– The effect can unpredictably potentiate and there can be dangerous interactions (such as severe neurotoxicity or a serotonin syndrome), so you have to know exactly about every single combination that you want to take!
– 25X-NBOMe, 25x-NBF & co .: The amphetamine analogues of psychedelic phenethylamines, such as 25x-NBOMe, 25x-NBF, etc. are in themselves stimulating and stimulating and have a strong effect on heart rate and blood pressure.
